The G-Class from Mercedes Benz has a strong history spanning over three decades. The German automaker is reportedly working on a new model which will be introduced sometime in 2017, while its global debut will happen in 2018. The new model is expected to be lighter in weight and offer better efficiency than the current generation. The new model is also expected tooffer more space, better stability and premium upholstery.
Reports indicate that the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be powered by a new 3.0-litre, in-line six-cylinder petrol (codenamed M256) expected to generate 360bhp of power and diesel (codenamed OM656) which generates 300bp of power. The powerful engines will come mated to anine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox.
Based on updates, it is believed that the German automaker will be using more of aluminium for the structure and also increasing the vehicle’s width by about 100mm, thereby taking it to about 1860mm. The kerb weight of the vehicle might also be reduced by 200kgs which will prove to be useful on a vehicle that currently weighs about 2570kg. To help with better stability and handling, the new model will get a three or four-link set-up for the front suspension and latest electro-mechanical steering system.
As for safety, the new model will get more driver assistance and other modern safety equipment. Globally, it will debut in 2018 and it is to be seen if India can turn out to be one of its potential markets.
