On sale since May 2005, the Swift undoubtedly is one of Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling car models. The hatchback went on to become such a huge hit that Maruti didn’t make any major changes until 2011 when it introduced the next generation model. Now, the automaker has introduced an updated version with 10 per cent improved fuel efficiency and more features.
The new Swift range starts at Rs 4.42 lakh for the entry-level petrol version. The top-spec diesel version, meanwhile, is priced at Rs 6.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). As far as design changes are concerned, the new Swift benefits from a revised front bumper, bezel fog lamps and trendy alloy wheel design. The cabin design, on the other hand, is accentuated with sporty silver accents on the trim.
Given that feature-rich cars are among the best-sellers in their respective segments, Maruti has paid special attention to the feature list of the new Swift. The top-spec model, as a result, now gets push start button, electric retractable wing mirrors with turn indicators, stylish alloy wheels, premium upholstery, reverse parking sensor and speed-sensing audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.
The diesel model is powered by a 1248cc, DDiS diesel engine developing 75bhp of power and 190Nm of torque. The petrol variant gets an 1197cc, K series VVT engine that delivers a power of 84bhp of power and 115Nm of torque. The highpoint, however, is the improved fuel efficiency which is to be found on both petrol and diesel models. The diesel car has a certified fuel efficiency of 25.2 kmpl, up by 10 per cent. Meanwhile, the petrol model comes with a 9.67 per cent improvement and has a certified fuel efficiency of 20.4 kmpl. To improve the efficiency, Maruti says it has made several changes in the engine hardware leading to improved thermal efficiency, reduced frictional losses and changes in engine calibration.
The new Swift competes with the existing lot of premium hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto Evo and the Hyundai Grand i10. Despite growing competition from newer rivals like the Grand i10 and the new Polo, the Swift has always managed to sell in big numbers for Maruti Suzuki. Now, with the introduction of this new model with improved fuel efficiency and more features than ever, we can’t help but think that the Swift is bound to increase its market share in the premium hatchback segment.
