Utility vehicle giant Mahindra is busy testing its next-generation Bolero and prototype models of the vehicle have been spotted yet again. Caught on test in Koyembedu, Chennai, the spy shots reveal the XUV 500-inspired design and a few production-ready exterior panels.
Codenamed U301, this next generation model of the Bolero has been in the making for quite some time now. The vehicle though now looks like it’s in the final stages of testing given the production-spec body panels, roof rails and taillights.
Like the new Scorpio, the Bolero is also expected to receive a heavy dose of upgrades in terms of quality and refinement. Although we still expect a bit of utilitarian feel to the cabin, Mahindra is likely to take care of the rough edges for the better.
At present, the Bolero is powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine which develops around 63bhp of power. The next-generation model is expected to feature a detuned version of the m-Hawk unit. While the latter produces 120bhp of power and 290Nm of torque in the Scorpio, we expect it to be detuned with emphasis on efficiency. What’s also expected is the three-cylinder, 1.5-litre diesel unit from the Quanto.
Surprising it might be for many, the Bolero is still among the best-selling vehicles in India largely thanks to its old-school, rugged image and loads of utility on offer. With more than 15 variants and ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh, the Bolero is the leader in its segment which also includes Chevrolet Tavera, Tata Sumo and the Tata Movus.
