New generation Jeep Wrangler details surfaces

Jeep has been developing the new-gen Wrangler (code-named JL) for quite some time now. The off-roader was spotted on several occasions, each time affording us brief glimpses into its new body style (it gets a pick-up body style for the first time) and the updates made to the exterior complete with a new roof and windows et al.  Now, more concrete information has surfaced from the FCA’s internal dealer ordering system, leaking details about options, packages, colours, and features.

First up, the new JL Wrangler will be available in five trims - JL Sport (2 Door), JL Rubicon (2 Door), JL Unlimited Sport (4 Door), JL Unlimited Sahara (4 Door) and JL Unlimited Rubicon (4 Door). The JL Sahara (2 Door) has been discontinued, whereas India will get the JL Unlimited Sport (4 Door) only. 

The American SUV will be available in three engine and three transmission options. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine is part of this line-up with a BSG (start-stop system). It will be joined by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 oil burner. On the petrol front, the popular 3.6-litre Pentastar engine will be available. The transmission options include a six-speed manual sending power to the rear wheels only. There will be two configurations of the eight-speed automatic unit. The Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system is also listed as an optional extra.

The Wrangler will get eight colour options – granite crystal metallic, acid yellow, firecracker red, billet silver metallic, bright white, black, and nacho. Customers will get a host of personalisation choices with exterior and interior packages. As seen in the spy shots earlier, the Wrangler gets seven roof options. There’s three-piece hardtop in two configurations and the premium soft-top gets four style options. The wheels are either 17- or 18-inch wrapped in off-road or all-terrain tyres. Other optional features include anti-spin rear differential, keyless entry, engine block heater, and remote start system.

The new Wrangler is expected to go into production this November. It will be manufactured at Jeep’s facility in Toledo, Ohio, where the Cherokee and Wrangler JK are currently being produced. The all-new Wrangler is expected to debut at this year’s Los Angeles Motor Show. The Wrangler is currently being imported as a CBU in India and the new generation is also expected to take the same route once it goes on sale in international markets.
