In India, the Freelander has only two competitiors-the Volvo XC60 and the Mitsubishi Montero at Rs 40.50 lakh and Rs 41 lakh respectively. At Rs 39.20 lakh, the Freelander is cheaper than a lakh as compared to the XC60 and more than Rs 2 lakh than the Montero. But it is not appalling news that the baby Land Rover is cheaper, it always has been the stepping stone into the British marque’s range worldwide. Will this change? Are we in for a surprise, well maybe?
The news is Freelander 3 will be launched in 2015; it has been spied with a production body in England. The images are very convincing; the baby LR now looks longer and wider, bigger than the current model. One cannot guess the actual design at first glance, but the headlights look similar to the Evoque and the grille looks a lot bigger. There are also rumours that suggest the Freelander would be rechristened as the Discovery and may be taken in the Discovery fold.
There is no confirmation on the power trains, although the AJ-200 four-cylinder engines would be made available along with a supercharged petrol engine. There are no details available regarding the launch date and there are speculations that LR may start selling the Freelander in late 2014 itself and may call it the 2015 Freelander.
When the European spec car is launched then we expect the car in India a good six-eight months later.
