Ford unveiled a new four-door sedan concept last year at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. Set to revive the popular Escort nameplate, the concept gave us all a preview of a new C-segment sedan, which the Amercian carmaker is developing, specifically for the Chinese market.
The car has been spied on test in China, ahead of its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April. Ford has confirmed that the car will be manufactured in China by the Chang’an-Ford joint venture.
In China, the new Escort will be positioned between the Focus and the Mondeo and will face the Honda Crider as its arch rival. Expect Ford to plonk in the new 1-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, besides the standard range including the 1.6-litre and 2-litre units. Power will most likely be transmitted to the wheels via a 6-speed manual or Ford’s acclaimed dual-clutch DCT box, found on the India-spec Fiesta.
The new Escort will go on sale in China first, ahead of other developing markets where the C-segment is proving to be a big source for growth in sales. Stay tuned for full details on the new Escort and all the other important cars heading for the 2014 Beijing Auto Show.
