The new Chevrolet Sail sedan has, for the first time, been caught on camera. Spotted in China, the car is expected to go on sale over there later in the year. The car has been jointly developed by GM and its Chinese partner, SAIC.
With Chevrolet planning a new entry-level sedan to be placed below the Sail sedan, we can expect the new car to be larger and more superior to the current car. This is evident from the large rear door and the bigger rear end of the test mule. The front has new bumpers and a new larger grille. It had been earlier predicted that a facelift would be introduced to replace the current car. But now it seems that GM decided to introduce a new model altogether.
Currently the Chinese market gets the Sail sedan with two engine options, a 86bhp 1.2-litre or a 102bhp 1.4-litre unit. These engines are expected to be phased out in favour of a 1.5-litre unit producing 110bhp and 141Nm of torque. This engine currently powers GM’s Buick Excelle.
The current generation Chevrolet Sail sedan was launched here last year and hasn't exactly been successful. Once launched in China, it won't take long for the new car to arrive in India. It is available with either a 1.2-litre petrol or a 1.3-litre diesel engine. The range starts at Rs 5.23 lakh for the base petrol and goes up to Rs 7.7 lakh for the top-of-the-line diesel variant. It faces competition from the Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Classic among others.
