BMW is now offering the 3 Series and 5 Series models with a space-saver as a spare tyre. Earlier, only run-flat tyres were sold with a new car.
Run-flat tyres, which are sold as a standard set with BMW cars till now, helped the driver to drive the car for a certain distance till they could find a place to repair the puncture. They are better than normal tubeless and tube-type tyres as they resist the effects of deflation and allow the driver to control the vehicle better in case of a blow out.
The tough sidewall of these run-flat tyres helps the car to run with zero air up to a certain distance. But the disadvantage of such tyres is that in case of a puncture, the car can be driven only for a small distance and the puncture needs to be repaired as soon as possible. Since the strengthened side wall takes all the pressure in case of a puncture, prolonged running of the car in this condition may further damage the tyres risking the safety of the passengers in the car.
Looking at the road conditions in India, it is quite likely that a car's tyre will get punctured some or the other time. It is sometimes difficult to find a puncture repair shop and in such cases the car tyres are bound to get further damaged. Having a spare tyre definitely helps in such a situation, which on replacement, doesn’t necessarily leave the driver stranded in a remote place.
BMW customers in India have been demanding such a spare tyre to be included in BMW cars. The German automaker has finally taken notice and will provide the new 3 Series and 5 Series cars with a space saver. This is good news for prospective BMW buyers who will avail of this option with their new car and can take it out on long journeys without having to care about damaging their run-flat tyres.
