Tata Motors is planning to give the Nano a complete makeover by launching two different engine options, one petrol and one diesel. The new petrol Nano will be powered by an 800cc engine (currently 624cc) but details of the diesel aren’t definite. We are expecting the Nano to get a two-cylinder diesel engine derived from the Tata Ace which will help keep costs in check. The new petrol Nano will compete with the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon. The new petrol is expected to be priced at Rs 2.5 lakh whereas the diesel version might be priced at Rs 3.5 lakh.
The diesel engine is something that Indian consumers really want in the Nano but the recent announcement of the possible diesel price hike might affect the market sentiment to some extent. But at the same time, the fuel costs for a diesel Nano will be cheaper than a 150cc premium motorcycle as it will have fuel efficiency between 25-30 kmpl. That means not getting cold, hot, wet or not having the ability to make conversation with three other people; considering all this, the proposed price tag for the diesel Nano doesn’t seem too exorbitant for the world’s cheapest car.
