Ever imagined a Ford Mustang with a pre-1950s British luxury limousine’s fascia or can you envision a fancy museum display car in your parking lot with ABS, airbags and an automatic transmission which is not too difficult to maintain? If you cannot answer in the affirmative to any of these questions, then Mitsuoka Motors might give you a reason to say yes.
This 46-year-old, Japan-based coach builder which caters to 10 countries worldwide; including our neighbours Bangladesh and Nepal will be using the Auto Expo 2014 as a platform to display their unique cars and eventually decide on the feasibility of working in India.
Their cars are retro in design, usually replicated from the cars of yore mated with modern technology and powertrains. World over coach builders create clones of rare cars or they go radical, however Mitsuoka’s philosophy is simple - build retro cars based on modern platforms. The idea is to take a production car’s chassis and stamp the Mitsuoka signature styling on it. Among their line-up of products they have a sports car based on the NSX platform named Orochi and an electric car based on the Mitsubishi I MiEV.
India is a very unpredictable market, a car is an emotional buy here and how this combination of niche and affordable motoring is perceived in the country cannot be predicted.
