Mitsubishi has decided to push its longest serving soldiers, the Lancer diesel and the Pajero into retirement. This is a move that was long expected from the Indo-Japanese manufacturer, given that the Lancer sold here is extremely old and had been left behind by the competition many years ago.
The Pajero, despite still being popular with the off-roading community due to its mud-plugging abilities and platinum grade reliability, is nevertheless another vehicle well past its prime. It was only logical to discontinue it in favour of the Pajero Sport which is now being offered with a lower price tag due to it being assembled locally.
The cars are no longer produced for the Indian market and the company is expected to discontinue them completely once stocks are sold out. The vehicles have been removed from the official website also. This means that both vehicles will surely be offered with big discounts and special offers in the coming months.
Reports suggest that this might be the fate for the Cedia which despite being more modern than the Lancer and having received a face lift is still an older car than most of the competition. The Cedia might have superb handling characteristics but that is overshadowed by the fact that it is only powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine.
The discontinuation of both the Cedia and the Lancer makes a good case for the Japanese manufacturer to introduce the much more modern and efficient current Lancer sedan.
