Mitsubishi has resurrected the Mirage brand after seven years in form of a hatchback, which in their words is fuel efficient, compact and affordable. The Mirage is already on sale in certain markets in Asia like Japan and Thailand; and it will make European debut at Paris Motor Show, later this month.
The Mirage brand is used for economy cars in Mitsubishi range; it was first used in 1978 and four different models were launched with same name till 1996. The current model is 3.7-meter long hatchback, powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder MIVEC engine that is low on CO2 emissions – 92 grams/km. With start/stop technology, the car is expected to take advantage of the stringent emission norms in Europe.
Mitsubishi has not announced the name of the car for Europe and there is a possibility that the small car will be renamed, the Colt. The A-segment car will compete with the Suzuki Alto, Renault Twingo and few others, after launch early next year.
There is no official word from the Japanese car maker about getting this car to India; but we are one of the biggest small car markets in the world, and Mitsubishi will certainly try and take advantage now that they have a perfect product for the market.
