Mini is on a roll for 2018. The British carmaker revealed an all-new logo a few days back that will adorn the entire range from March 2018. Now Mini has announced the introduction of the seven-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with double clutch for 2018.
The new transmission will be available for the Mini 3-door, the Mini 5-door and the Mini Convertible. The seven-speed DCT replaces the older six-speed automatic for the Mini range. The automatic transmission can be had with selected engine options as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual. With the new transmission comes a new stylish and more modern gear lever as well.
Mini says that the new DCT gearbox is operated by means of a newly-designed electronic selector lever. The lever always returns to the original position after changing between driving mode D, neutral position N and the reverse mode. Parking function is by an electronic P button. Meanwhile, the S mode can be activated from position D by shifting the selector lever to the left.
The electronic control of the new transmission also includes a shift strategy based on navigation data. It can control both the engine start/stop function and coasting in order to reduce fuel consumption and emission levels. The new transmission also comes with coasting function which is available in both the Mid and Green driving modes.Â
The new seven-speed Steptronic automatic transmission also does duties on the other Bavarian cars under the BMW group. It hopes to retain the spritely characteristic of Mini while making it even more efficient and fun to drive.
