Mini India has launched the third model, the Convertible, based on the new UKL platform. The three-door soft top version is being imported to India and has a starting price of Rs 34.90 lakh (ex-showroom India).
Like the hardtop models, even the new Convertible has grown in dimensions. It is 98mm longer, 44mm wider and 7mm taller than the predecessor, with a 28mm longer wheelbase. The car offers more cabin space and also has a larger boot at 210litres. The available space, however, reduces when the top is down and occupies significant space in the boot.
The Mini Convertible has similar interior to rest of the range with circular dials and toggle switches for most other functions. In terms of features, it gets the three-door model’s LED DRLs, ambient lights, music system with navigation and safety features including traction control and ESP. This car is available with a high-performance 2-litre, 4-cylinder engine with BMW’s TwinPower turbo technology. Developing 189bhp of power and 280Nm of torque, this engine allows the car to sprint from 0-100kmph in 7.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 233kmph. The engine is mated to a newly developed 6-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.
Unlike the old model which had a measly 1.6 naturally aspirated with around 122bhp of power, this new generation model is being launched as a high-performance convertible which means it’s a niche product with no direct competition.
