Mini has displayed its Convertible at their stall at the Auto Expo 2018, and we decided to pit it against its closest rival in our Indian market, the Audi A3 Cabriolet. The Mini Convertible is targeted at customers who want a compact and sporty drive that’s unique and has enough performance on tap.
Exterior
One look at both cars and you will agree that the design language is miles apart. The Mini benefits from an overall curvy design that makes use of a huge grille, large oval head lamps and a wide rectangular air-vent lower down the front bumper. The retro look is fuelled by the two-door set-up with a canvas roof that folds partially above the boot section. It looks like it can shred the tarmac thanks to the muscular stance and wide tyres. The Audi A3 Cabriolet, on the other hand, has straighter lines and is a fine balance between being sporty and elegant. This soft top convertible also benefits from the two-door setup and some eye-catching aluminium trim framing the exterior side windows and A-pillar.
Interior and features
Just like the exteriors, the Audi and the Mini differ immensely in their interior design too, but what’s common is the premium feel and the feature list. The circular theme of the Mini is carried forward to the interiors and can be seen in the massive round infotainment screen that stares at you from the centre of the dashboard. Another unique bit are the aeroplane-style toggle switches, which also include a huge red toggle switch for cranking the motor. That said the A3 Cabriolet’s cabin is extensively highlighted with silver trim and looks every bit a German in terms of design. There’s a wide dashboard with a sleek retractable screen and four distinct circular air-vents that look cool.
Engine and gearbox
Powering the Mini Convertible is the Cooper S’ 2.0-litre engine that makes 189bhp/280Nm. This motor uses a quick shifting six-speed automatic gearbox for transmission duties. On the other hand, the A3 Cabriolet gets a 1.4-litre engine that produces 150bhp and 250Nm of torque. It is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to transmit all that power on to the road.
Conclusion
While the Mini Convertible will set you back by Rs 33.52 lakhs, its rival, the Audi A3 Cabriolet, will cost you Rs 49.36 lakhs.
