MG Motor India have announced their product plans for the Indian car market and there is an all-electric SUV slated for a 2020 launch. While no details of the product have been divulged, it is being said that the SUV will be built in India.
MG's parent company, SAIC, has already showcased the Roewe Marvel X electric SUV in its production form globally and we think it might make it to India in 2020. On the other hand, MG has already begun testing the Tucson-size ERX5 E-SUV in India which is powered by a 114bhp motor and is capable of running for over 400 kms on a single charge.
While we will get a clear understanding of of the exact India-bound product as we move closer to the launch, it has been confirmed that the e-SUV will be built in India. Only the electric powertrain will be imported from SAIC China with rest of components being localized to keep the price point in check.Â
The MG electric SUV will have existing competition in the form of the Hyundai e-SUV arriving in 2019 and probably more electric car options from the local Indian car makers as India prepares itself to jump to Euro 6 norms in 2020.Â
