Mercedes-Benz has just introduced the S650 in India. The Mercedes-Maybach S650, in fact, is the German automaker’s flagship offering. It is positioned above the standard S-Class in the Indian line-up. Being a flagship offering, the S650 is ought to be feature-laden. Here are the top four features of this ultra-luxurious sedan.
Engine
One of the talking points of the S650 is its handcrafted 6-litre V12 engine. The massive bi-turbo engine puts out 621bhp of power and 1,000Nm of torque. It’s the torque figure that truly boggles the mind. In fact, it is so much that Mercedes had to use their 7-speed automatic gearbox since the current crop of 9-speed units simply cannot handle so much torque. The V12 features liquid-to-air intercooling which helps reduce intake temperatures. Meanwhile, twin turbos operate at up to 22 psi of boost, while a variable-pressure fuel pump and high-speed engine management delivers instant throttle response at nearly any given rpm.
LED exterior/interior lights
Mercedes says the S650 is the first car without a single light bulb since the advent of electric lighting in automobiles. All its exterior and interior lights are made up of LEDs – from its headlamps and triple-band daytime running lights to its three-segment vertical tail lamps, the long-lasting and efficient LEDs are part of every exterior lighting function. LEDs also offer quicker illumination, offering other drivers more time to react to your brake lamps and other signals.
Inside, the S650 gets almost 300 LEDs. From the configurable ambient lighting system, offering a variety of colours and themes, to the subtle lighting of the storage areas, footwells and even the instrument displays, the lighting is among the most striking features of the cabin.
Safety features
The S650 is loaded to the brim with safety features. You get plenty of active safety features including brake assist, attention assist, adaptive high beam, crosswind assist, blind spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, rear-cross traffic alert, night view assist, 9 airbags, ABS, ESP and lots more. Stuff like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane change assist help ease off stress when driving on the highway with proper road markings as the car will steer itself and make minor steering corrections to stay within the lines.
Suspension
The S650 gets a fancy suspension system from Mercedes that we have seen in their other flagship models. Dubbed MAGIC BODY CONTROL, this fully active system is camera-based and scans the road surface ahead and prepares the suspension to take action before the wheels reach bumps and dips. A network of sensors and electronically controlled hydraulics generate forces to counteract the effects of the road surface on ride and handling. What’s more, the CURVE function lets the car lean into the corners much like a motorcyclist, to help reduce body roll and better stability while cornering.
