Mercedes-Benz India has introduced the S650 for the elite at the ongoing 2018 Auto Expo. The S650, as we know, is the latest in the range of Mercedes-Maybach offerings which have been designed with more luxury, comfort and exclusivity in mind.
The Mercedes-Maybach S650 is based on the recently launched 2018 S-Class and like the standard car, the former sports the same design updates. The front-end is completely new thanks to the revised grille, tri-split LED headlamps and bumpers. In profile, it is as long as its three-part name (5.4-meters) while at the rear, its re-profiled bumpers and tails lamps complete the update. Mercedes says the S650 is the first car without a single light bulb since the advent of electric lighting in automobiles. All its exterior and interior lights are made up of LEDs.
Under the long hood rests a massive power plant, a handcrafted 6-litre V12 engine, in fact. Featuring a bi-turbo setup, this engine puts out 621bhp of power and 1,000Nm of torque. Paired to a 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox, the V12 motor features liquid-to-air intercooling which helps reduce intake temperatures. Meanwhile, twin turbos operate at up to 22 psi of boost, while a variable-pressure fuel pump and high-speed engine management delivers instant throttle response at nearly any given rpm.
Inside, the digital displays on the dashboard have been boosted in size while signature two-spoke wheel with wood inserts has been replaced by the latest generation three-spoke wheel. The feature list has been expanded both in terms of comfort, safety and for the first time, with semi-autonomous driving function. Apart from this, the S650 gets a number of driver assists like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane change assist to help ease off stress when driving on the highway with proper road markings – the car will steer itself and make minor steering corrections to stay within the lines and maintain a certain amount of distance from the car ahead.
Whereas the standard S-Class competes against the BMW 7-Series and the Audi A8, this more luxurious offering is in a class of its own. Nonetheless, for the price of a Mercedes-Maybach S650, you can also get a Lexus LS or a Porsche Panamera Turbo. Other options at a higher price include the Bentley Continental Flying Spur and the Aston Martin Rapide.
