Up till now only BMW made an SUV with a coupe like sloping roofline – the X6. But recently, another German luxury automaker joined the fray to come up with its own version. Mercedes-Benz, in fact, recently introduced the GLE coupe with a similar controversial profile that made the X6 grab headlines when it came out back in 2008.
Having made its online debut, the GLE is now headed for the upcoming Detroit Motor Show early next month. Mercedes has revealed that the GLE coupe will be available in both diesel and petrol models with power output ranging between 258bhp and 367bhp. The top-of-the-range model namely the GLE 450 AMG will represent the AMG performance line.
In addition to the DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, the Sports Direct-Steer system and the driver assistance systems typical of Mercedes, the GLE 450 AMG will also get the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive as standard.
Dimensionally the GLE measures 4,900mm in length, 2,003mm in width and is 1,731mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,915mm. In comparison, the X6 is 4909mm long, 1989mm wide and 1702mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2933mm.
When launched, the new GLE will join the existing range of SUVs from Mercedes-Benz including the GLA, GLC, ML, GL and the G-Wagon.
