Mercedes-Benz is betting big on the vehicle industry moving towards electric power and one of the first major steps it has taken in this regard is to create an EV platform that underpins the future electric vehicles. Dubbed MEB, the first vehicle to preview this platform is the Generation EQ SUV which was unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and will now make its debut in India at the 2018 Auto Expo.
The Generation EQ is an SUV designed along the lines of what Mercedes has used in their quite successful GLC crossover. There are many shared design elements from the current Mercedes line and given that the EQ is built on a flexible platform, it can be expanded in length for more seats indicating that this vehicle is just the start.
Noticeable design traits include the signature Mercedes logo, silhouette and single piece light setup at the rear.
The cabin design is minimalistic but in that Mercedes way, thanks to the subtle luxury touches all around. The dashboard is dominated by a massive digital display that is spread out across its length while the seating arrangement indicates that this is a strict four seater. There is also a second touch display between the front passengers to control most of the functions in the cabin.
We believe that in production guise, the Generation EQ will look very much like the current crop of Mercedes SUVs and sedans but with small MEB touches to show where the automaker is going with its design language. This could range from anything between EQ badging all the way to new forms of interaction with the driving systems.
Powering this SUV is a pair of electric motors installed on both axles to provide a total of 402bhp and 700Nm of torque. That’s more than enough, according to the brand, to propel this Generation to 100kmph in less than five seconds. A floor-mounted battery pack provides this vehicle with a range of 500km and also comes with fast charging capabilities.
