The CLS, one of the first four-door coupe sedans in the world, has made a comeback in the Indian car market after a brief hiatus and unlike others, it hasn’t become too expensive. For just over Rs 84 lakhs ex-showroom, it is probably one of the most stylish sedans you can buy.
The CLS introduces Mercedes’ new design style in India, the one that started with the A-Class sedan globally. The sleek intelligent LED headlamps and the three-part grille and the AMG-like single slatted grille.
The swept back headlamps are fused into the fender while the raked windscreen feels like an extension of the curve that rises from the front.Â
The profile has the iconic roofline that sweeps into the cabriolet-like boot while the 18-inch alloys fill up the slightly flared wheel arches.
The main attraction, though, are the rimless doors both in the front and the back which take the CLS into a class of its own.
Twin exhausts in the back and a well contoured bootlid complete the raked tail design. There is no badging at all in the back except for the logo, making the design elements pop.
Inside, the CLS gets the S-Class dashboard with one of the largest screens in the business, of which one part is the instrument cluster while the central part is the touchscreen infotainment system.
The steering wheel is from the latest G-Class. The cabin gets mood-lighting in 64 colours and a 13-speaker Burmester audio system.
Of course, the cabin is laden with leather and the front seats are electrically operated with memory function and it gets a dual-zone climate control system.
There is good space in the back as well but for the sloping roofline which restricts the headroom. There are enough stowage spaces for the rear passengers as well.
It also gets an electric sunroof. Safety is taken care of by 9 airbags along with the radar based collision mitigation systems and other safety aids.
The boot is generous enough to carry luggage for all five occupants and houses the spare wheel which is a space-saver.
Finally, under the hood you have the 245bhp/500Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine mated to a nine-speed automatic which gets the car to 100kmph in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 250kmph.
