Mercedes-Benz has presented a new compact SUV concept at the opening of its new R&D facility in Beijing, China. Called G-Code, this innovatively designed concept has a smaller footprint than the brand’s smallest production crossover model – the GLA.
Design highlights on this new concept model include a coupe-like side profile, a flowing greenhouse and sporty proportions. Furthermore, compact dimensions, camera assistance as well as the plug-in hybrid system with the long electric operating range makes it ideal for traffic in Asia's mega-cities, says Mercedes-Benz.
The G-Code also has electronic all-wheel drive technology with what Mercedes calls "digital prop shaft". The latter ensures a sporty and energy-efficient set-up at the same time both on and off the road. Among the hightech features, the most interesting cutting-edge feature is the "multi-voltaic silver" paint finish which acts like a giant solar panel. The paint can also be charged electrostatically by the relative wind or by the natural wind when the vehicle is stationary.
Although Mercedes has not revealed much in terms of production proposition for the G-Code, the concept model does seem like it could form basis for a completely new small crossover which could be positioned below the existing GLA.
