Mercedes-Benz has planned to ramp up production to meet demand for the new S-Class. The company announced plans to extend work hours at its plant in Sindelfingen, Germany. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer is also working on increasing production at other factories to cater to the demand for smaller offerings.
On Tuesday, the German carmaker announced that they have received clearance from the Works Council to extend the working hours to 74 minutes per day in 2014. This work time will be in addition to 30 minutes implemented at the plant. Mercedes sold 7,617 units of the new S-Class last month.
Mercedes is also working on increasing the inventory levels of its compact vehicles C-Class and GLK by adding shifts to its Bremen plant. Additionally 10 shifts were added and will continue until the end of this year.
Mercedes came under pressure when BMW took the title of the best luxury car manufacturer in the world and Audi trumped them to claim the No.2 spot. The battle between the three big manufacturers from Germany has always been in the news and to a company like Mercedes being at the No.3 spot was demeaning to their image. Mercedes, however, seem to have addressed all the lurking problems and are determined to reclaim the title of the bestselling luxury carmaker by 2020.
In other news the new S-Class produced between April 11, 2013 and October 14, 2013 has been recalled by Mercedes to fix a seat-belt flaw.
The new S-Class is expected to be launched in India on January 8.
