Mercedes-Benz has announced that they plan to further expand their front wheel drive arsenal when a second generation based on its MFA (Modular Front-wheel Architecture) platform debuts in 2018. The current line-up is the German automaker’s first foray into FWD and to be based on this platform. It will be completed with the introduction of a new model by next year.
The current front wheel drive head count stands at four with the unveiling of the GLA-Class in April prior to the Shanghai Auto Show. The car will definitely follow the A-Class and the B-Class to the Indian market along with the CLA-Class which will complete the MFA line up in India.
Next in line is predicted to be a station wagon model based on the CLA-Class, which may not find its way to the Indian market. The German manufacturer has been reluctant to introduce Shooting Brake variants of its more premium sedans in our market due to lack of demand.
Mercedes-Benz has confirmed what models will be added to the line-up in 2018, but there are talks of a CLA convertible and a two-door roadster. For now though, the introduction of the GLA-Class is the most awaited next step in the German automakers plans for the Indian market as the sub Rs 25 lakh car will go up against the Audi Q3, BMW X1 as well as the Volvo V40 Cross Country.
