With the triumph of the internet, the increased amounts of data and computing speeds of today’s computers has highlighted the benefits of artificial intelligence in the future automobile.
"Artificial intelligence is a key future topic for Mercedes-Benz, in-car and beyond, such as in the fields of mobility services or in development and production", says Anke Kleinschmit, Head of Daimler Group Research. "Artificial intelligence has ceased to be science fiction and the progress in autonomous driving is an impressive proof of this.
Sources add that Artificial intelligence will only be successful on a long-term basis if there’s trust between man and machine. This is primarily possible when ‘AI’ is only allowed to support, examine decisions and reach results in a shorter time span. Mercedes-Benz is developing their ‘AI’ to have enough knowledge to autonomously respond to the environment, so, it could analyse the current traffic situation for all forms of transport, and suggest one that suits the user’s personal daily routine and mood. It could analyse the driver's behaviour, interpret needs and adapt accordingly, like play the right music or set the appropriate cabin temperature.
This also means that the vehicle must be able to acquire knowledge about their environment and analyse it too. MB is working extensively on further optimising automatic image and pattern recognition for driver assistance systems, and autonomous driving vehicles which uses the interaction of cameras, sensors and the associated computing units. Vehicles of the future must be able to clearly recognise pedestrians and pay attention to crossings in addition to other important functions.
Over the past few months, Mercedes-Benz has made it clear that it wants to be a part of the EV future and also develop their Artificial Intelligence knowhow so that autonomous driving can be reality sooner or later.
