With the launch of the sedan and coupe versions of the new S-Class done and dealt with, Mercedes-Benz is now concentrating on the new cabriolet model which has been in the making for rather long. A prototype model of the luxurious drop-top has been spied on test by Auto Express UK.
Wearing heavy camouflage, the S-Class cabriolet was seen testing under heavy rains. The vehicle reportedly will make use of a retractable fabric roof sourced from the E-Class cabriolet. The soft hood design will not only save weight and but also take up less space compared to a hard top.
The cabriolet model will be based on the S-Class coupe, which means one can expect the same set of engine and drivetrain options to be on offer. The cabriolet range is likely to start off with the S500, featuring a 449bhp 4.7-litre bi-turbo V8 engine. Like the rest of the new S-Class range, this new model could also be offered with the AMG-spec S63 and S65 versions.
The S-Class cabriolet will go on sale sometime next year. When launched, the car will join the latest-generation S-Class family which includes the sedan, the coupe and the recently introduced Pullman limousine.
