There is no identity crisis as such in the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio despite having 20 models on sale globally. But, Mercedes plans to change the names of its SUV range aimed at streamlining them with sedan models like the C-, E- and S-Class.
Although, nothing is official yet, the upcoming second-gen GLK-Class will be named as GLC according to a source. The M-Class might be re-named as the GLE and this moniker will also be shared with an additional coupe behind it, when the GLC coupe concept goes into production. The GL might also get re-christened as the GLS to position it as the S-Class of the company’s SUV line-up.
BMW is the only manufacturer that has smartly centred its sedans and SUVs, for eg: the 3 Series’ SUV derivative is the X3, similarly 5 Series = X5. This move by Mercedes is certainly aimed at streamlining the names and it is a step in the right direction for the manufacturer with their ever increasing product range.
