As Mercedes-Benz India enters the last quarter of 2015, the brand is set to treat all its fans with the launch of the new GLE on October 14, 2015. This new luxury model, in essence, is a heavily revised version of the outgoing ML-Class with a new nomenclature as the GLE.
Compared to the ML, the GLE boasts of a refreshing new design, upgraded interior and an all-new 9-speed automatic gearbox in place of the old 7-speed unit.
Design wise, the GLE retains the overall shape of the ML-Class but adopts the new Mercedes family look. As a result, nearly all the design elements appear more angular and more aerodynamic compared to the squarish design of the outgoing car. Inside, Mercedes hasn’t changed the cabin by much; however, the brand has carried out a few noticeable upgrades in the form of a sportier-looking 3-spoke steering wheel, new design for the air vents and a different display for the COMAND infotainment system.
Globally, the GLE range is offered with up to four engine options. For the Indian market, Mercedes is expected to continue with the 258bhp, 3-litre V6 diesel and the 203bhp 2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. However, what comes as a welcome upgrade is the brand’s new 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox that will replace the old 7-speed unit. The GLE, then, will be the first vehicle in India to feature this new 9-speed unit.
When introduced, the new GLE will compete with the BMW X5 and the latest-generation Audi Q7 which is due for launch in the Indian market.
