The upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLE63 AMG has been spotted testing with minimal camouflage. It was unveiled earlier this year as the Concept Coupe SUV and is the Stuttgart automaker answer to BMW's X6 SUV. Our sources reveal that this car is a sportier model thanks to the AMG spec wheels and Avantgarde grille.
This vehicle in the GLE range will rival the BMW X6M and is expected to have a very similar design philosophy. The GLE when launched will be a high-riding coupe-like SUV with both petrol and diesel engines options as well as 2WD and AWD. However, keeping in mind the kind of buyers Merc has targeted with this car, we believe that it will be more oriented towards usage on the tarmac rather than on the dirt roads.
The concept car was shown with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 but we believe that this car, the GLE63 AMG, will be offered with the 5.5-litre twin turbo that is expected to produce 520bhp and 700Nm of torque. The gearbox is likely to be the 7G-Tronic box for the standard GLE while the GLE63 AMG will be mated to the speed shift version. Four-wheel drive power will come from the Three-pointed Star's 4MATIC AWD technology.
When launched, in mid- 2015, the GLE and GLE63 AMG will compete with the BMW X6/X6M as well as the recently spotted Audi Q6/Q6S.
