Mercedes-Benz is all set to introduce the AMG version of the GL-Class in the Indian market. The GL 63 AMG, which is considered to be the most premium SUV from the manufacturer, will be launched at an event in Mumbai on April 15.
The Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG is based on the GL-Class SUV. With AMG badging, the seven-seater vehicle stands tall on 21-inch alloy wheels. The AMG quad-tailpipes get chrome accents. Inside the cabin, the car boasts of sporty new seats, and AMG steering wheel and another feature named Active Curve Control. This feature, offered as standard, enables the driver to take corners effectively while keeping the vehicle stable.
Powering the 2.5 tonne GL 63 AMG, the new 5.5-litre Biturbo V8 engine churns out 549bhp of power and 760Nm of torque. This power is sent to the 40/60 front-rear biased four-wheel-drive system. This mill is mated to a seven-speed 7G-Tronic AMG automatic transmission. The huge vehicle still manages to do the 0 to 100kmph sprint in just 4.9seconds. The top-speed is electronically limited to 250kmph. Another highlight is the air suspension that comes with an ‘AMG ride control’ package of adaptive, self-leveling features and active anti roll-bars.
Though the current GL 350 CDI is assembled in India, the GL 63 AMG will come to India via the CBU route. This big bad boy will then join the automaker's AMG portfolio that includes the C 63 AMG, the G 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG and the SLK 55 AMG. The GL 63 AMG is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2.4 crore. It will go up against the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the Range Rover.
