Mercedes was spotted winter testing its next generation three-row GLS SUV. Although the boxy silhouette may not look stylish, it’s a sure-shot sign of the cabin being accommodating (especially at the rear).
Mercedes’ new MHA platform will underpin the upcoming GLS. It will allow the new application to shed weight, offer intelligent packaging with more room at the third row, and also be able to accommodate hybrid powertrains. Reports state that the brand’s in-line six cylinder motors are expected be standard, and it will also see the inclusion of Mercedes-AMG’s V8 motors for the performance-hungry.
Sources add that Mercedes could also go the S-Class way, by offering ‘Maybach’ treatment on the new GLS. This is essential if it intends to compete with the likes of the Range Rover SV Autobiography and the Bentley Bentayga. Given that these spy shots depict the GLS prototype wearing heavy cladding, we expect the reveal to be still some time away, probably by mid-2019. Stay tuned for the details.
