Mercedes-Benz and Tata Motors have parted ways after 60 years. The move comes in the wake of the German automaker opening its paint shop in October last year. Mercedes-Benz had been using Tata’s paint plant since it began local operation in the early 1990s and decided to setup its own facility when the agreement came up for renewal in 2010.
Mercedes-Benz and Tata began their Indian sojourn in 1954 with the manufacturing of medium size commercial vehicles and this lasted for around 15 years. Tata’s first vehicle, the Estate was also based on a Mercedes-Benz station wagon of the period. However, both manufacturers came together to setup the local assembly plant in 1994 to produce the then newly launched 1993 E-Class sedan and this venture lasted for six years.
