According to a recent report by Car News China, Mercedes-Benz has launched its newest sports car – the AMG GT S, in China. The spiritual successor to the famous SLS AMG has been launched with prices starting at 1.68 million yuan (Rs 1.73 crore).
The lower-spec AMG GT will be launched later this year in September, says the report. Interestingly, the AMG GT S has benefited from the lesser import duties in China than usual since cars with engines of 4-litres are chargeable for an import duty of 40 per cent, while those with engines below 4-litre have to make do with just 17 per cent of taxes.
Globally, the AMG GT is available in two states of tune for the engine. The twin-turbocharged 4-litre V8 engine under the hood of the GT S is tuned to produce 510bhp of power at 6,250rpm and 650Nm of torque between 1,750rpm and 4,750rpm. This model does the 0 to 100 kmph run in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 310kmph. The standard GT is powered by the same engine which churns out 462bhp of power.
Mercedes-Benz India is expected to launch the AMG GT in India later this year. To be offered as a fully imported vehicle, it is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 2 crore to Rs 2.5 crore and will rival the high-end versions of the Porsche 911 and the Audi R8.
