McLaren has revealed its intention to build two to three bespoke one-off cars for its customers per year. The British marquee will commission these bespoke vehicles for the customers under the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) division and it will be the customer’s choice whether or not their vehicles will be revealed to the public.
Looking at the success Ferrari has garnered with their bespoke cars of Special Projects division, McLaren doesn’t want to be left behind to provide its customer with a unique tailor-made vehicle experience. McLaren believes their MSO division has grown enough over the past few years to facilitate such service and now has the ability to undertake the bespoke products for its customers.
The Surrey-based carmaker further added that it will take them around 18 to 24 months to create each bespoke vehicle without deviating from their regular production offering. However, undertaking the bespoke projects would be useful to test bed for new materials and technologies while presenting new R&D opportunities to experiment on.
The last and only bespoke creation from McLaren was the X-1 built way back in 2012. The X-1 was based on the MP4-12C and was revealed at the Pebble Beach weekend in Monterey. Each component was tooled exclusively for the X1 from all the exotic materials and was finished in a unique black paint requested by the anonymous buyer; who already owned McLaren vehicles like the F1, Mercedes-Benz SLR and the 12C, but wanted a unique car. MSO obliged with the X-1, and we hope to see more such cars rolling out from McLaren Technology Centre in the years to come.
