British supercar car maker, McLaren, has been fairly active in introducing new and updated models ever since its global launch in 2010. After starting off with the MP4-12C and the 12C Spider, the brand followed it up with the launch of the limited-run P1. More recently, it introduced the 650S coupe and the 650S Spider.
In keeping with its plan to introduce a new model each year, McLaren has announced the name of its upcoming sports car which is scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2015.
Previously referred to only by its internal codename ‘P13’, this new model will be known as the McLaren Sports Series. It will join the range below the 650S, bringing the company’s famed credentials to the sportscar segment for the first time.
Like the 650S and the P1, the Sports Series will have a carbon fibre chassis and a mid-mounted V8 engine. The latter, in all probability, will be a detuned version of the 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 engine currently found in the 650S. Upon launch, the Sports Series will go up head to head with the world’s most sought-after sports car – the Porsche 911. Although to be precise, this new model will be a fitting rival only to higher-end versions of the standard 911 and not the Turbo and GT3 models.
