McLaren has announced that it will produce only 375 units of the P1 hypercar. The British sportscar maker also announced that the car will be priced at 1.3 million dollars (Rs 7 crore). The P1 is McLaren answer to the upcoming Ferrari F150 hypercar (limited run of 499 units) and will now be more exclusive than the latter with a smaller production run.
The McLaren P1 will be powered by a reworked version of the same 3.8-litre V8 engine (now with two turbochargers) which sits in the MP4-12C. It will produce 890bhp and 900Nm of torque and of this amount 717bhp will come from the petrol mill and the remaining 173bhp from an electric engine.
The electric motor's entire shove is available at the touch of a button on the steering wheel, and this feature is called the Instant Power Assist System. McLaren says that this helps the P1's throttle response ape that of a naturally-aspirated engine. The car can cover up to 9.6km on electric power alone from a battery pack that the company claims has higher energy density than any others'. The batteries can also be charged in two hours via a plug-in charger.
The McLaren P1 will be launched officially at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show which will begin from March 5.
