While we all have seen how incredible the P1 GTR looks like from the outside, McLaren has now released first pictures of the interior, showing all the extreme elements that have gone into completing the cabin of the highly awaited model.
The first pictures show how the driving environment of the P1 GTR has been designed to be as focused for the driver as possible, and is stripped of all but the essential items in a bid to keep weight to a minimum. The lightweight carbon fibre chassis is carried over from the road-going P1, and weighs just 90kg including the upper and lower structures (including roof) and the roof snorkel.
The highlighting element of the P1 GTR’s cabin is the new steering wheel, which has been designed on the lines of the McLaren’s 2008 Formula 1 championship-winning MP4-23. As on a Formula 1 car, key controls including the mode switches are located to the centre of the steering wheel. This allows the driver to fully adjust the setup and characteristics of the car without having to take their hands off the wheel.
The cabin is equipped with lightweight DTM-style seats and six-point motorsport harnesses. This will be specifically set up for the individual driver, and mounted directly to the chassis, reducing weight by having no additional mounting brackets.
McLaren has already made it official that the P1 GTR will go into production in June 2015 when the 375th and final example of the standard P1 has been made. When put on sale exclusively for P1 owners, the hardcore P1 GTR will be the most track-focused vehicle from McLaren till date.
