McLaren has announced that they will have a 30-car limited production run of its track oriented MP4-12C Can-Am. The Woking based automaker has said the cars will be based on the 12C GT3 race car and have been fitted with an unrestricted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which produces 630bhp.
To make it a racetrack screamer, McLaren have generously used carbonfire across various components to reduce weight and increase structural rigidity. This includes the mirror mounts, engine cover vents, sil covers, badges, most of the cabin and the rear-wing (installed to give the car 30 per cent of its downforce). It also gets special light-weight alloy wheels and Pirelli tyres.
The British automaker says the car has not been subject to any of the racing regulations that have been placed on the GT3 car. However, in the interest of keeping the racing theme, the interiors have been given an FIA-approved race-specification roll cage, two race seats with six-point harnesses and the steering wheel from the 12C GT3 race car.
McLaren had earlier displayed the car as a one-off concept vehicle at the Pebble Beach Concourse but decided to have a limited production-run after getting a phenomenal response from McLaren fans. The car has been aimed at those looking to buy a unique track day vehicle and will be offered with a variety of support packages.
Prices for this bespoke piece of British engineering start at 375,000 pounds sterling before taxes and duties (Rs 3.2 crore) and production will start from March 2013.
