It was July last year when we first broke the news that McLaren has begun working on the successor to the legendary McLaren F1. (You can read the story here.) Now, after almost nine months, McLaren has teased the ‘Hyper GT’ codenamed ‘BP23’, the car that will probably add a new dimension to the sportscar experience.
The McLaren F1 was unique with its three-seat layout – one seat sitting in the centre at the front and two seats at the back. The McLaren F1 was the closest that you could get to single-seater race car experience even on everyday roads. The BP23 will most probably continue with the same layout and add more to the performance.
The Hyper GT, as it is called now, will be the most aerodynamic production car of its time. First examples of the BP23 are expected to roll out in 2019. Just like the F1, only 106 examples of the Hyper GT will be built and it is no surprise that all those cars have already been sold. The price tag is insignificant for the McLaren but be assured it will be north of $2 million at least (approx. Rs 13 crore).
Details of the powertrain are yet to be disclosed and we expect it to get a bespoke V12 engine like the McLaren F1. But, like all modern McLarens, the engine will work in sync with electric motors from the hybrid system which will be replete with KERS and other F1 technologies. Those who have been chosen to be the owners of the BP23 Hyper GT, are already working with the McLaren engineers, giving their inputs and choosing materials and colours to adorn their bespoke car built by McLaren Special Operations.
