McLaren, it seems, is on a roll with all new launches in quick succession starting with the P1 hypercar. After introducing the latter, the 570S, the hardcore P1 GTR and the 675LT, the British sports car firm has now unveiled the 540C Coupe which will serve as the entry-level model of the line-up.
The 540C, in fact, is the second model in the brand’s new Sports Series. What’s being called as the most attainable McLaren yet, the 540C, joins the recently revealed 570S in the Sports Series. These introductions bring the number of new McLarens launched in 2015 to four.
The 540C shares its DNA with the models in the Super Series and Ultimate Series, including a lightweight carbon fibre chassis and race-derived technologies. It is fitted with a mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin turbocharged V8 engine. As its name suggests, the power unit generates 540bhp of power at 7,500rpm and 540Nm of torque between 3,500-6,500 rpm.
Power is delivered through the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox. Thanks to the low weight, the 540C can accelerate from zero to 100kmph in 3.5 seconds, zero to 200kmph in just 10.5 seconds, and on to a top speed of 320kmph. At the heart of the 540C, as with the 570S, is the carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis which has been newly designed with a greater focus on day-to-day usability and offering improved ingress to and egress from the cabin.
McLaren has revealed that deliveries for the 540C will begin in early 2016 with each example costing upwards of £126,000 (Rs 1.18 crore).
