After the Supreme Court clamped down on the auto industry yesterday with the ban on the sale of luxury diesel cars and SUVs in the National Capital Region for three months, we spoke to Mercedes-Benz to find out their reaction.
A senior official at Mercedes-Benz India revealed, “We think this decision is going to adversely affect the auto industry as a whole and will certainly encourage the creation of an unequal ground. This ban on diesel engines also creates an environment of uncertainty and will severely impact our expansion plans and future investments put in place for the Indian market. We also have to consider the loss of jobs that this will result in at the dealership level, at the vendors producing diesel engines and this will also negatively impact our own workforce.”
All diesel engines used by Mercedes-Benz on their cars in India are above the 2-litre engine capacity that has been banned. Mercedes-Benz will need to chalk out a way ahead with the sales of petrol cars only in the NCR for the upcoming three months.
