Mazda has just taken the covers off the 25th anniversary edition MX-5 at the ongoing New York Auto Show. This new special edition model has been conceived to celebrate 25 years of existence of what has been the most successful roadster of all time.
Alongside the anniversary edition, Mazda has also revealed a newly developed SKYACTIV chassis that will form the basis of the next generation MX-5. For more than two decades, the MX-5 in any form has been at the top of its game thanks to its lively handling, responsive engines and affordability.
Having sold over 940,000 units so far, Mazda has introduced the 25th anniversary edition which is based on the 2-litre, 160bhp Roadster Coupe model with retractable hard top. Available exclusively in Soul Red Metallic, the car can be specced with either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
The other big news from the Mazda show floor at the ongoing New York Auto Show is of the newly developed SKYACTIV chassis that will be used for the upcoming next-generation MX-5. The brand says that it will be the first time that SKYACTIV technology has been displayed in a front engine-rear wheel drive layout. Mazda also says that this upcoming model has been engineered and developed for better body rigidity and crashworthiness, whilst weighing around 100kg less than the existing MX-5.
