Luxury car manufacturer Maserati is expected to enter the Formula E championship owing to its popularity in the world of motorsports. Formula E has witnessed participation from some of the popular names like Renault, Audi, Mahindra and Jaguar, and Maserati could possibly be the last one to join the electric championship. Although Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Chief Sergio Marchionne initially insisted on Ferrari’s involvement in Formula E, FCA later clarified that the all-electric series would not be under the Ferrari banner.
Maserati is set to adopt some form of electrified drivetrain by 2019, followed by all-electric sports car based on the Alfieri concept the next year. FCA is currently contemplating if the electric racing series is worth the investment for the company. Reports have also indicated that Maserati has been looking to make a comeback in the Formula 1 as well. FCA currently has Fiat, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram Trucks in its portfolio along with Maserati. Ferrari is also headed by Marchionne, despite parting ways in 2015. Alfa will be returning to F1 after a gap of over 30 years and Maserati will be the third FCA brand on the grid.
More details about Maserati’s plans for the Formula E will be known in the days to come. Reports also indicate that premium car manufacturer Aston Martin is also in talks of entering the Formula E space. The company might however look forward to collaborating with one of the existing teams.
