Maruti Suzuki has announced that the land acquisition process for its new Rs 4000 crore manufacturing plant at Hansalpur in Mehsana district of Gujarat has been completed. Speaking to the Hindu Businessline, Chief Operating Officer S Y Siddiqui confirmed that work on the plant will begin from next year. He added that when completed, the plant would have annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh units.
The Indo-Japanese automaker also plans on setting up new stock yards and has confirmed Bengaluru, Nagpur, Ranchi and Siliguri as four locations for them. It is currently scouting for a fifth location and may choose Vishakhapatnam. Speaking on its performance, Siddiqui said that at present MSIL commands a 40 per cent share of the market and hopes to increase this number to 45 per cent by 2015-2016.
Maruti’s decision to set up a new plant in Gujarat is likely to have stemmed from repeated labour problems and the July 18 riots at its Manesar plant. This is the first time that MSIL is moving out of Haryana since it began local operations in 1982.
