The Maruti Suzuki YL1 mid-size sedan is likely to be called the Ciaz and will replace the ageing SX4 sedan in the Indian market. The Indo-Japanese automaker is believed to be on a crusade of sorts to move itself above the mass market hatchback commuters and start cultivating a more premium image. This has been a segment that it has always struggled to make an image in and this has been evident with the Baleno and then the SX4.
The Ciaz (if it’s is called that) is based on the Japanese automaker’s Authentic Concept vehicle which was shown at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. It is based on a whole new design language which was first shown with the later. We already know what the car’s overall shape is, as well as what the interiors will look like thanks to a host of spy shots of various test mules doing the rounds near their factory in Gurgaon.
In terms of engines, it is expected to be powered by the 1.4-litre K-Series petrol from the Ertiga MUV as well as a 1.6-litre diesel that it is likely to source from Fiat but will eventually be powered by one of Suzuki’s own diesel engines that are currently under development. The gearboxes are expected to be a five-speed manual and most probably the AMT from the Celerio hatchback.
We expect that the car will be unveiled at the Auto Expo and will be launched a few months later. It is their C-Segment competitor and will rival the Renault Scala, Nissan Sunny, Honda City, Hyundai Verna and VW Vento.
