On the heels of the success of the AMT (automated manual transmission) version of the Celerio and the new Alto K10, the Maruti Suzuki might launch the WagonR Stingray with this new gearbox. The Indonesian market will receive this model first and Maruti Suzuki might launch it for the Indian market as well.
The Stingray is a more premium vehicle in comparison to the standard WagonR. The car looks funkier with the restyled bumpers, projector headlamps, different grille, multi-spoke alloy wheels and clear lens tail lamps. What will be new to the vehicle is the addition of the AMT gearbox.
The WagonR Stingray is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder K-Series engine that produces 67.04bhp of power and 90Nm of torque. At present, this mill comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Maruti Suzuki might introduce another variant that will feature the AMT gearbox identical to the Celerio and new K10.
The Magneti Marelli five-speed automated manual transmission has found itself an acute liking within consumers in India. Maruti Suzuki had taken a note of it when they launched the AMT Celerio at the start of 2014 and also introduced the refreshed Alto K10 with the AMT gearbox.
With the WagonR hatchback being popular in India due its tallboy design and decent cabin space; and more premium looks of the Stingray, the AMT WagonR Stingray might prove to be a good recipe for success in the Indian market. This car might be launched this year while demanding a price of Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000 more than the standard hatchback, giving a tough fight to the Tata Bolt that comes equipped with the AMT gearbox.
