The country’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki’s entire product lineup has been limited to a five-speed transmission. However, this time around, the company has revealed its plans to introduce a new six-speed gearbox codenamed the MF30. Interestingly, the report further claims that the new Swift hatchback is likely to be the first model to get the new six-speed gearbox followed by other models in the company's product portfolio.
It is believed that the new six-speed transmission will deliver better fuel efficiency figures and reduce the engine stress. Apart from technological advantage, the new six-speed transmission will help the company strengthen its competition against its rivals such as Hyundai, Renault and Tata who offer six-speed gearbox options on specific models.
In the past, Maruti Suzuki had been offering a six-speed unit in the 1.6-litre diesel variant of the S-Cross in India. However, with the recent launch of the S-Cross facelift which is limited to a 1.3-litre engine, it is offered with a five-speed manual transmission only. More details on the new six-speed transmission will be known in the days to come.
