Maruti Suzuki launched the Swift in India 13 years ago in the summer of 2005 and the rest, as they say, is history. The iconic hatchback has continued to break records in India since its arrival, with the latest one being the 20 lakh sales milestone.
The Swift has become a household name in the country selling around 10000-15000 units every month. The second generation Swift won the coveted 2012 Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY). It is, now, in its third generation and the sales of the B-segment hatchback are growing stronger still. In the period of April-October of the fiscal year 2018-19, the hatchback’s sales grew by 36 per cent YoY with a market share of 29 per cent.
Launched in February at 2018 Auto Expo, the third-gen Swift achieved the fastest one lakh sales booking in a record time of less than ten weeks. To cope with the increasing demands, Maruti Suzuki increased the production by 45 per cent to 1.39 lakh units during the period of April-Oct 2018-19.
The Swift is available in two engine options – a 1.2-litre petrol VVT petrol and 1.3-litre DDiS. The former produces 82bhp/113Nm while the later churns out 74bhp/190Nm. Both engines come with a five-speed manual and optional AMT automatic. The automatic contributes to over 20 per cent of the Swift sales.
Commenting on the achievement of the landmark, R S Kalsi, senior executive director, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki said, “This has been an extraordinary journey and at this juncture, I would like to express my gratitude to all our customers for their immense trust in the brand".
