Following the launch of the Stingray news has emerged that Maruti may introduce a CNG version of the car which currently houses the 1.0-litre K Series engine. The WagonR, which the Stingray is based on, currently gets a CNG kit and the same is expected to trickle down to the Stingray as well.
The Stingray is now available in three variants priced between Rs 4.10 lakh and Rs 4.67 lakh, with the top end VXi (opt) variant being equipped with features like ABS, tilt-adjustable leather wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors and driver’s side airbag. All variants of the Stingray get projector headlamps in the facia along with a music system with USB and AUX, steering mounted audio controls and an all- black trim on the inside.
The CNG kit on the WagonR is available on the LXi variant and costs an additional Rs 50,000. The Stingray CNG will most likely be priced along the same lines, implying that the Stingray LXi may be priced at around Rs 4.5-4.6 lakh.
The CNG kit is a logical addition to improve sales in a time of rising fuel prices. But the WagonR, even with its CNG seems to have taken a beating due to the recession which consequently has resulted in a drop in demand for cars. The introduction of the Stingray CNG might not be a big help, as the price then will be close to that of bigger hatchbacks, but Maruti will do it anyway as it does not involve additional development cost.
