Maruti Suzuki sold 87323 units in August 2013 as compared to 54154 units in the corresponding period last year resulting in a growth of 61.2 per cent. While the smaller models showed a significant amount growth as compared to last year, the SX4 sedan and the Indo-Japanese automaker’s range of UVs and vans both registered negative numbers.
The A-segment models comprising the 800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR sold 32019 units as compared to 22062 units, while the B-segment models like the Swift, Ritz and Estilo sold 17409 units as compared to 6059 units in the corresponding period last year. The Dzire compact sedan sold 13723 units in August 2013 as compared to 3085 units in August 2012. While the SX4 sold 348 units as compared to 447 units last year, the UV segment and vans both registered a negative growth of -33.7 per cent and -31.4 per cent.
It is almost certain that such a significant jump in numbers is due to the fact that at this time last year, Maruti Suzuki had closed its Manesar plant for a month after riots broke out on July 18. It resulted in injuries to 96 persons and the death of a company official. It re opened the plant on August 22 and initially ran only a single shift where it was producing around 150 cars.
